Easter Bunny has been busy.

Here's some clues to what is hopping down the trail this week to a select few.

 

 

The Epiphany of the Aglet Anvil

I finally found a company that makes up to 8E safety toe work boots.  I've been wearing them just about every day since I got them last February.  The laces finally gave way in late October, and I made a new set from some cheap paracord.

I just cut the cord and melted the ends, smashing it flat to get the cover and center fibers to melt together.  The resulting chisel tips were able to fit through the eyelets.  At least one end on each lace was able to fit through.  They were serviceable, but not very pretty.

After wearing them for a few days, I noticed the paracord kept on coming untied.  The cover was just two slippery for a conventional shoe lace knot.

Using some Google-fu, I found Ian's Shoelace Site.

Here he had a solution for slippery laces :  Ian's Secure Shoelace Knot. (*Twenty-nine and a half, and I've had to re-learn how to tie my shoes.)

While there and learning more and more about shoelaces, I saw a picture of an aglet anvil for crimping metal aglets.

It was then that inspiration struck on what to give my siblings for Christmas.

I usually try to give something that I can make, like fudge or humidity control media containers.  Last year I ran out of time and sent Amazon gift cards. 

With time running out for Christmas, I quickly assembled the materials.

The hammers came from Harbor Freight.  I picked them up on a Friday evening heading home from work.  I told the cashier that I was looking to get hammered this weekend.  She obliged me with a verbal rim shot.

Ivan Korloff has passed away today. May God embrace him with a bear hug of his own.

It was his work after leaving the ring that is the most inspirational.

As for this poor imitation, I will continue to act as Momma Fargo's heel whenever the script calls for another debate.

The picture got a little blurry, both the revolver and I were more interested in shooting than posing.

Wheel Gun Love

I recently helped a co-worker buy his first gun.  He never thought he would feel the need to own a handgun, but has become increasingly concerned about his and his daughter's safety.  I advised him to do a lot of window shopping and research.  Go to gun shops, hold the different pistols, find one that fits your hand and points naturally for you.

Part of the shopping was a day at the range to try the different options and see which one he liked best.  The local range requires that a second person be with you when renting a hand gun.  I got to be that second person.

One of the choices he was considering was a small .38 J-frame 5 shot revolver with some Crimson Trace grips.  I tried it and fell in love.  I don't know if it was the mechanics of loading the cylinder or the feeling of the un-burned powder hitting me in the face, but something about shooting it put a smile on my face.

He decided on buying a sub-compact 9mm from me.  I now had an empty spot in the gun safe and burning desire to fill it with some type of revolver.

Up till now, every gun purchase has had some serious reason behind it.  Either as a hunting rifle, a teaching tool, or defensive purpose.  Now I was shopping for a revolver for purely recreational use.

I decided on a S&W Performance Center 627-5.  An N frame, 8 shot, .357 mag revolver.  I can not defend this purchase as a practical one.  Two big and heavy for a conceal carry gun, and while .357 could be used as a hunting pistol, a .44 mag would be a better choice.

Brought it home two weeks ago, and was able to get to the range with it for the first time today.

I am still smiling.

Without A Voice

1) Republicans complained that they only had one of the three levers of power in Washington.

2) They won a a majority in both the House and Senate last November.

3) They have the numbers, but not the will to lead. A minority of the majority party voted with the entirety of the minority party to fund DHS.

Michigan has fourteen Representatives in the House.

Nine of those fourteen are Republican.

Six of those nine voted to fund "Amnesty."

I would like to remove the candidate I helped put into office as failure should have consequences, unfortunately there is no recall mechanism to remove a member of Congress.

Ammunition Storage - Re-usable Indicating Silica Gel Canisters

Ammunition needs to be kept dry.  Sealed containers are start.  Adding silica gel packs to absorb any extra moisture inside is even better.

When I first started my stockpile collection, I dropped 10g packets into each ammo can.  As I'm rotating through the hoard sensible supply, I'm finding that the packets are now indicating 60% saturated.  I've decided to add date labels with a piece of painters tape to reduce my opening and closing. (They are already labeled by caliber.)

SilicaGelPackets.com has a nice selection of non-carcinogenic indicating gel packets. The 10g packets that are perfect for a .50cal ammo can~(approx 1200 in^3), are packaged in plastic baggies that will melt in the oven when trying to dry 'em out.  They also sell the stuff in bulk.

I have some cigar tins lying around that are perfect for the gun cabinet, but a little bulky for the ammo cans. So enter the google-fu and I found some aluminum lip-balm containers on bulkapothecary.com that look to be the right size. A little tinsmithing with a finish nail on the tops, and voila==> small re-usable, indicating silica gel canisters.

3 hours @ 300F when the orange turns green and you're good to go.

For a relatively small investment <$50,  I have 50 packets that can be reused.  (I'm also reclaiming the beads from all the plastic baggies to re-use in the cigar tins.)

So...how do you keep your powder dry?

And do you practice any specific inventory management scheme when heading to the range or storing new purchases?  FIFO, LIFO, WIHOH.

(FIFO = First In, First Out)
(LIFO = Last In, First Out)
(WIHOH= Whatever I Have On Hand)

Phone Companies.....

The end of the year is coming up, time to re-budget and re-evaluate the day to day expenses.  

First up...internet service bundled with phone.

With all the gamers and streamers in the house, we need a fairly fast connection.  My current bundled provider is not quite cutting it during peak usage.  Comcast is offering decent pricing for 50mps service over a 1 yr contract.

It is tempting me to order just the internet service, and get a landline again.

Called the 800 number and spoke with Angela from Springfield.  She could not give me a number either.  She said they are not allowed to quote the price because it could change at any moment. Tell All Book

My dad has published another book.  This one is more of a tell-all book about meeting my mother. It's full of sex, violence, and drugs.  I told him I would wait to read it after he and mom have passed away.  Some things you just don't want to know about your parents when you have to see them face to face.

If you have Amazon Prime or Kindle Unlimited, you can read it for free, as it is in the lending library.  The print version should be available by this Friday. (CreateSpace takes a little longer for the review/approval process.)

Anyway, he's very exited about it.

Fishing 2014

This year's fishing trip was different.  My boss offered to pay for a charter for me and my fishing buddies.  It wasn't the quiet reflective time, I;ve come to expect during my annual salmon trip.  This was working a small commercial fishing boat.

The challenge here wasn't finding and fighting the fish itself, it was trying to stay on your feet in the rolling chop.  For a shore fisherman, finding my sea legs wasn't going to happen.

On my turns, I went straight to the deck and fought the fish from my knees.

After six hours we had eight fish.  A mixed catch of king salmon, steelhead and an elusive brown trout.  We had at least one coho that got away. Not a bad day for this time of year.  No trophies here, but a lot of good eats.

Memorial Day Weekend 2014

Freedom is a special thing.  It does not mean being able to do what ever we want, but being free to do what is right, and that freedom is never free.  A terrible price has been paid for us to enjoy that freedom, and I fear we have become a nation unwilling keep up on our payments.

I spent Saturday at the range with my two younger sons.  The youngest used a 10/22 and a Buckmark pistol.  The older one and I used a Springfield Armory M1 Garand and a FNX45 pistol.  While trying to reload an en bloc clip, I though of those men during the Korean War doing the same task with the imminent threat of being overrun.   It gave me a new appreciation for detachable magazines and stripper clips.

The Garand came to me through a co-worker.  His brother had served as a Marine in the Korean War, and in the brother's words was a "gun nut".  He passed away in 1982 and all his firearms went to his brother (my co-worker) to keep in trust for his children.  The children are of age now, with children of their own, and have no interest in their father's firearms.  This seems sad to me.

Along with the rifle were several en bloc clips and a canvas pouch to hold two loaded clips.  The clips were loaded with blanks.  His brother had apparently been a part of an honor guard, rendering Military Funeral Honors.

So this Memorial Day, I did do some BBQ, but I also taught my children what the day is about, and why it was started.  To see and hear people wishing each other a "Happy Memorial Day," doesn't seem right.  To me, they just don't "get it."  To those that do "get it", please teach your children well.


PS.  The ribs were delicious.

USDA Swat Team?

When I think of USDA, I think of meat inspectors.  You know,  guys in white coats and hard hats walking through a processing plant holding a clipboard and checking temperatures.  Sort of like Paulie.  You know, Rocky's brother-in-law.

I guess inspectin' the cow punching business has gotten much more dangerous.  How else to explain the USDA's solicitation for submachine guns?

Wow, Detroit.  You Big D, you.  What is happening?

First you elect a white mayor for the first time in a half century.  Okay, he's still a Democrat, we can talk about that later.

But your police chief is now all down with concealed carry,  thinks the law abiding will help make Detroit a safer place.  That's pretty radical for a Detroit Police Chief.

Shoot, he might start thinking that the high cost of local government is a detriment to private business and industry and stuff.  Well, maybe not.  That might be a bridge too far.

Well, Detroit, I hope you will continue on this road of self help and responsibility.  Keep surprising me, please.
